  • Research summary

Attachment theory has been used widely as a framework to explain the development and maintenance of a number of mental disorders, including depression. The current study aims to explore the mediating role of emotion regulation - how emotions are managed and controlled - on this link, and to see whether this link differ between the non-clinically depressed and the clinically depressed population across cultures.

This research will recruit non-clinically depressed British and Vietnamese adolescents and young adults (aged between 13 and 18) in schools and their clinically-depressed counterpart at clinics/hospitals in Scotland and Vietnam, respectively. Participation in the study is entirely voluntary and every participant will be made aware of their right to withdraw from the study at any time before the data are analysed. Participants will be ensured that not participating or withdrawing from the study will not influence them in any way. Prior to the study, participants will be given the opportunity to ask any questions regarding the study.

Before completing the questionnaires, the participants will be given a ID (printed on both consent form and the questionnaire), which will be used if the participants want to withdraw from the study. For those who decide to withdraw from the study, their data will be deleted and will not be used. Paper copies of the questionnaires will be available for participants to fill in and give back to the researcher. Participants will first be asked to complete their age, gender, ethnicity. For the main part of the study, participants will fill in 5 questionnaires, including the Relationship questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationship Structures Questionnaire, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the Rumination Scale in the Response Styles Questionnaire, (Details of these questionnaires can be found in the supporting documents). The total estimated time to complete the questionnaire is approximately 30 minutes.
