Research summary
Testing a new measure of adherence: the Adherence To Exercise for Musculoskeletal Pain Tool (ATEMPT)
The overall aim of the ATEMPT study is to develop and undertake initial testing of a new tool to measure adherence to therapeutic exercise for musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Preliminary research showed that exercise adherence is poorly conceptualised. Focus groups were then conducted with physiotherapists, patients and researchers to produce a conceptualisation of adherence to therapeutic exercise for MSK pain. Statements produced as part of this process were then used to form items for a measure of adherence. We would now like to evaluate the reliability and validity of this measure by collecting data from patients with MSK pain.
The questionnaire will be distributed by hand to physiotherapy patients in three Trusts across the Midlands. It is expected to take around 30 minutes for the participants to complete the questionnaire. We estimate that 1500 questionnaires will need to be distributed to achieve our target of 500 responses. Eligible participants are adults (18 years or over) who have been recommended exercise as part of their treatment for MSK pain.
The questionnaire packs will consist of an A4 envelope with basic instructions on the outside for completion of the questionnaire. Inside, the envelope will contain an invitation letter, participant information sheet and the questionnaire booklet, which will also contain the consent form. There will also be an addressed, postage paid envelope for the participant to post the completed questionnaire back to us. Patients will complete the questionnaire and post directly back to the research team. We will then post follow up questionnaires directly to 200 participants who agree to be contacted again. The estimated start date for the study and distribution of questionnaire packs is March 2019. The estimated end date for data collection is the end of May 2019.
