  • Research summary

It is now well recognised, that alongside health and social care services, appropriate housing support plays an important role in enabling older people living with frailty to remain in their own homes, and to return home after a hospital stay. Evidence suggests that the impact of poor housing on older people’s health cost the NHS £624 million per annum (HC2018). Increasingly, service providers are improving ‘home from hospital’ and ‘supported discharge services ‘ by integrating health and social care. However, housing related services are still marginal in this integration, when they have the potential to significantly support rehabilitation and to reverse or reduce frailty (Ipsos Mori 2014). Whilst there is evidence on the benefits for older people of integrated support in the context of specialist housing such as Extracare (Hall 2019), we would like to explore the concerns of the majority of (frail) older people who continue to live in their own homes. Housing has previously been identified by the CARE 75+ oversight group as a priority, and we will explore the specific issues in more detail. In parallel, we would like to explore current best practice and responses to frailty and related initiatives by housing providers (e.g. Anchor Housing) who may already be potentially addressing these challenges by liaising with health and social care services. \nAim and objectives\nWe aim to use four PPI workshops and five interviews to refine current housing related concerns by frail older people and housing providers to be able to formulate a number of priority research questions for further investigation. These will inform the development of a research proposal to a major funder.\n1.\tExplore housing related issues through four public engagement events with 30 frail older people recruited from the CARE 75+ cohort in two different locations. \n2.\tExplore current practice and concerns with directors of five local housing associations who offer accommodation to older people.\n3.\tFormulate priorities and research questions for further investigation.\n
