Research summary
Mental health rehabilitation services provide recovery focused interventions to individuals with complex mental health difficulties in hospital and supported accommodation in the community. Physical features of the place where people receive rehabilitation, the support they receive from staff and the individuals’ sense of confidence and hope all have the potential to impact on their ability to engage in activities that enable then to have increasing independence within the community.
The purpose of this study is to explore if there is a relationship between the physical and social features of mental health rehabilitation environments and if this supports or hinders people with complex mental health needs’ participation in everyday life, relationships, pursuing interests and work. The study will also explore if personal factors related to recovery, particularly confidence and hope, have an effect on any identified relationship between the environment and their participation.
Collated scores for routinely used assessments in mental health rehabilitation services measuring the environment (Residential Environment Impact Scale (REIS)) participation outcomes (Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool (MOHOST)) and individual’s recovery (Recovery Assessment Scale/I.ROC) are available in an existing dataset for investigation.REC name
