Research summary
Dental decay, or cavities, is a global issue affecting both baby and adult teeth. A study by the World Health Organisation reviewed 472 reports and found that 48% of preschool children had experienced dental decay. The 2013 Child Dental Health Survey reported that 46% of adults and 34% of children aged 12 and 15 had visible tooth decay. Factors like fixed braces can increase the risk of decay.
Orthodontic treatments, especially fixed braces, can lead to decay because brackets and wires trap plaque, which worsens in the presence of sugary foods. This can be seen initially as white spots around the metal brackets, which is known as demineralisation.
Braces create hard-to-clean areas where plaque builds up, increasing the risk of tooth damage and decay. This emphasizes the need for good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups before starting orthodontic treatment. This highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between harmful and protective factors to reduce the risk of cavities.
The Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) tool, developed by Dr. John Featherstone in 1997, helps assess the risk of cavities. It allows for personalised prevention and treatment plans based on an individual's risk level. The aim of this research is to use this template to detect whether we can link this tool with the risk of different patients with cavities after a period of fixed braces.
