  • Research summary

Local Authorities have a responsibility to protect children and support families. Offering early help and support to families is generally agreed to be the best way to ensure that children are safe and families feel supported to overcome difficulties.

Some Local Authorities are developing community supports and networks to help people meet social care needs. However, little is known about how these community supports and networks can assist parents who have learning difficulties.

The aim of this project is to explore how local community supports and networks can assist parents with learning difficulties. We want to find out about the groups and networks that are available and how useful they are for parents with learning difficulties. The project will also inform future research to help to find out the best ways to support parents with learning difficulties.

We hope that this will help Local Authorities and community organisations to recognise the needs of parents with learning difficulties and make sure that accessible services and community support are available.

Our project will be based in two places in the north of England, York and Calderdale. We will have conversations with parents with learning difficulties and professionals who work with them. We will hold focus groups in which we will make maps of the places, groups, organisations and networks that are helpful to parents with learning difficulties. We will also talk with the parents about their lives, and experiences of being a parent, using walking tours and photographs as part of the conversations.

We will produce a local community map of the sources of support available to parents with learning difficulties in the areas, and a good practice guide that will make our findings available nationally. The guide will provide information about how to make communities more accessible for parents with learning difficulties.
