Research summary
Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a disorder where the listener has problems understanding the sounds that they can hear. Currently in the clinical assessment for APD a series of tests are used, including speech understanding tests, which may not have very good real world application to the child’s difficulties (Moore et al., 2012). It has been suggested that using report based measures such as questionnaires may provide more information on the challenges the child has been facing in terms of listening in their everyday life (Moore et al., 2012).
The Audiology department in BCUHB are currently developing a 'listening difficulties pathway' for children and want to know which questionnaires from those currently available for the use with children with hearing loss and/or listening difficulties could be used in this pathway.
Parents whose children have been seen in Audiology in the past 5 years who were found to have normal hearing but were having listening difficulties will be invited to fill in a survey asking them to rate and comment on questions from existing questionnaires based on their relevance to the difficulties their child is/was having. The main research questions are: which questions from the questionnaires are relevant to this population and what themes emerge from the relevant questions chosen.REC name
