  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to assess people’s understanding and experiences of receiving long term pain medications for chronic pain so as to enhance medications monitoring strategies. We are interested in gaining the views of those patients receiving medications review with the primary care pharmacist.in ABMUHB. As we get older long-term pain or chronic pain becomes increasingly problematic; with reports suggesting that a high number of people residing in the community experience pain over a long duration. Prescribed medicines are important to manage long term pain, but many of the prescribed treatments are associated with side effects. Therefore regular and painstaking review of chronic pain medication is particularly important for older adults often with multiple long-term illnesses and associated medications. For the purpose of this study, the primary care pharmacist will deliver a questionnaire to patients receiving medications review to assess their views about their chronic pain, long term medications and expectations of health services. They will also have the option to participate in one to one interviews with the university researcher SS. We consider that assessing patients’ understandings, expectations and beliefs about their long term pain medication will inform current medication management schemes and explore new ways of engagement and monitoring long term pain medications that is acceptable to the patient and health professionals
