  • Research summary

The aim of this research is to assess people’s understanding and experiences of receiving analgesia for chronic pain so as to enhance medication monitoring strategies. We are interested in hearing the views of patients receiving medication reviews from primary care pharmacists in South West Wales, U.K. As we age long-term or chronic pain becomes increasingly problematic, with reports suggesting that a high number of people residing in the community experience pain over a long duration. Prescribed medicines are important to manage long term pain, but many of the prescribed treatments are associated with adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or side effects. Therefore regular review of medication is particularly important for older adults, many with multiple co-morbidities and associated medications. For this study, the primary care pharmacist will deliver a questionnaire to patients undergoing medication reviews to seek their views about their chronic pain, long-term medications and expectations of health services. They will also have the option to participate in one to one interviews with the university researcher. We consider that assessing patients’ understandings, expectations and beliefs about their long term pain medication will inform current medication management and explore new ways of engagement and monitoring long term pain medications that is acceptable to patients and healthcare professionals.
