Research summary
This study aims to evaluate the reliability and validity of using ultrasound scanning in assessing the structure and orientation of muscle fibres in the lower back in patients who have lower back problems. This will be done by comparing ultrasound images to MRI images of the same patient. Many patients who are currently on surgical waiting lists for back surgery have already had MRI scans performed as part of their management. This study plans on using such images as a reference to which the ultrasound scans can be compared to. Patients who have had MRI scans will be invited for ultrasound scanning. The images taken from these scanning sessions will be used for comparison against MRI.
