Data collection arrangements
The ProGel Research Database will collect and analyse clinical data from patients undergoing lung resection surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ProGel, an intraoperative air leak sealant, in reducing post-operative air leaks, hospital length of stay, complications, and healthcare costs.
Data will be drawn from routine clinical records and will include patient demographics, surgical details, post-operative outcomes, and follow-up information. All data will be pseudonymised and stored on secure NHS servers, with strict governance and oversight by a Data Access Committee.
The database will serve as a platform for high-quality observational studies, audits, and future research collaborations. Findings will be used to generate evidence that informs surgical best practices and supports cost-effective healthcare delivery.
Research programme
This project will create a database to collect information about patients who have lung surgery using a special surgical sealant called ProGel. ProGel is applied during surgery to help reduce leaks of air from the lung, a common problem that can delay recovery. We will record information from routine hospital care, such as patient health, type of operation, and recovery outcomes (e.g., length of hospital stay and any complications). This information will be stored securely, and personal details will be removed or replaced with a code so that patients cannot be identified. The database will help doctors understand whether ProGel is effective, safe, and provides value for patients and the NHS. It will also allow future research to improve surgical techniques and patient care.
