Research summary
The study aims to evaluate a carer support group and establish carer needs for carers of forensic inpatients. Currently, there is a lack of published studies within the UK evaluating carer support interventions for this group. We hope that this paper will aid clinicians in developing and facilitating effective carer support interventions.
Participants will consist of carers attending a carer support group delivered in the Forensic Service at Berrywood Hospital, Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. Carers of forensic inpatients who chose not to attend the group will act as controls.
The study should last approximately 6 months, with two data collection points, 4 months apart. Data collection will consist of carers completing 3 questionnaires measuring perceived stress, wellbeing and perceptions of burden. Following both data collection points, carers will be invited to attend a focus group, one group for carers who attended the support group and another for those who did not to identify carer needs and further explore carers wellbeing, perceptions of burden and stress.
