  • Research summary

Children and adolescents with kidney failure will require a kidney transplant in order to have a better quality of life. The preferred option is to receive a kidney transplant from a living donor who is usually a close relative such as a parent. Relatives from south asian communities are less likely to offer to donate a kidney to their child than those from other communities. Unfortunately there is no research available to inform us of the reason for this discrepancy nor what the issues are for parents when deciding whether or not to offer their child a kidney Therefore we aim to carry out a qualitative research study to help us understand the views and attitudes of south asian parents in an attempt to understand these issues better.\nWe will invite 12 - 16 parents of south asian children who have received a kidney transplant in the past to take part in a one to one research discussion. These discussions will take place with a children’s transplant nurse specialist at a time, date and place convenient to parents. An interpreter will translate the discussion if necessary. The interview will be digitally recorded and later typed by a company approved by Manchester University. All information provided by the parents will be confidential and only used to help us undertand the issues. The data will be analysed using approved research techniques and no person identifiable information will be used when reporting findings.\nOur findings will be used to help develop an educational package for NHS staff; information will be shared with colleagues via meetings, journal articles and conference presentations and will be used to inform any future research in this area.
