  • Research summary

At present the vast majority of research studies related to this subject have attempted to assess and quantify malnutrition in end of stage liver disease and although it is proven in the current literature that liver patients are at risk of malnutrition from the very early stage of the disease, there are currently no implemented interventions. This study aims to identify, assess and follow 21 malnourished patients for 6 months by using very simple and economic screening tools such as anthropometry, simple blood tests, subjective global assessment and Dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning. The primary objective is to quantify body composition pre and post nutritional interventions and health promotion advice. This test is reasonably economical but at the moment it is not routinely prescribed in this population to assess malnutrition.
The second objective is to assess dietary compliance. A targeted personalized dietary plan will be formulated by a specialist gastroenterology dietician and a 60 minutes consultation will be delivered by the dietician to the participent on a one to one basis. Participants will be followed up from baseline; at month 2 via telephone consultation, at month 3 via clinical assessment, at month 4 via telephone consultation. A final DEXA scan, biomarkers and anthropometry assessment will be undertaken at month 6 followed by an end of study form. A quality of life questionnaire will also be completed at baseline, 3 months and 6 months.
    Schedule of events:
Baseline visit 0: Consent-Confirmation of eligibility-Assessment (anthropometry, blood markers, DEXA scan, dietary advice/diet, food diary, 60 minutes face to face consultation)
    (2 weeks): telephone consultation.
Visit 2 (2 months): Confirmation of eligibility-Assessment (anthropometry, blood markers, dietary advice/diet, food diary, 30 minutes face to face consultation)
    (4 months): telephone consultation.
Visit 3 (6 months): Confirmation of eligibility-Assessment (anthropometry, blood markers, DEXA scan, final dietary assessment and collection of food diary).
