  • Data collection arrangements

Adult patients attending The Campbell Clinic for treatment will be given copies of the Patient Information Sheet and Consent forms, and this will be discussed with them at a meeting. Where consent is given, anonymised data will be collected for inclusion on the database. This data is currently gathered as part of routine treatments and stored in patient records, but this database will allow us to extract, anonymise and collate data for analysis. A table for clinical data collection will be used to ensure continuity at each clinical appointment. Patient consent for data collection is to be ongoing, with further data collection by clinicians at routine recall appointments. In addition, we intend to ask patients to evaluate the results of their treatment using a short questionnaire prior to and after treatment. We will not be storing sensitive data. Data will be anonymised, with just year of birth and gender recorded.

  • Research programme

Restorative dentistry uses a combination of techniques resulting from decisions made together by clinicians and patients, aimed at giving the patient what we perceive to be the best possible outcome. However, as new techniques and approaches develop, there is capacity for more evidence to justify one treatment over another option, both clinically and importantly, from the patient perspective. The aim of this project is to set up a Research Database which will enable us to collect and store appropriately derived data from routine patient care. The long term nature of this work requires data to be well managed and stored until sufficient information is gathered to analyse. This comprehensive and continuously updated source of observational data will be used to generate reports which evaluate treatments. We believe that this process will provide an effective way of evidencing predictable outcomes, assist in the development of improved practice techniques, provide additional guidance and support for patients, and inform clinical research in dental practice. In addition, implementation of studies to track patient satisfaction with clinical outcomes will provide advanced support for patient decisions.
