  • Data collection arrangements

The Patient Information Sheet will be sent to adult patients in advance of an appointment, at which clinicians will discuss research consent. Where study consent is given, anonymised clinical data will be collected from patient records of routine clinical treatment, for inclusion on the research database. This data will be collected, stored in a database, and used for research studies. This will not involve any additional treatment for patients, but may involve additional questionnaires, such as the a Quality of Life questionnaire. Patient consent for data collection is ongoing, and data will be extracted from clinical records by the research team at regular intervals, to account for clinical follow up and the longevity of some types of dental treatments. We will not be storing sensitive data. All data will be anonymised, with just year of birth and gender kept. For those patients who gave consent during the initial 5 year REC approval period, their data will continue to be stored, added to (if treatment continues), and used for research studies.

  • Research programme

Specialist dental treatment uses a combination of approaches resulting from decisions made together by dentists and patients, all aimed at giving patients the best possible outcome. However, there is little evidence directly from primary care to support dentists or to guide patients in this decision-making process. The aim of this project is to enable us to collect, store, and use for research purposes, appropriately derived data from routine patient care. This comprehensive and continuously updated source of observational data will be used to generate reports which evaluate treatments, in terms of both clinical results and patient centred outcomes. This process will provide an effective way of evidencing predictable clinical outcomes in a primary care setting. The use of a Quality of Life questionnaire will measure patient satisfaction with treatment outcomes, help us understand and manage patient expectations prior to treatment, and provide advanced support for patients considering different treatment pathways. All studies arising from the database will be aimed at: supporting fully informed decision-making for both clinicians and patients with respect to treatment choice, improving our own clinical practice, and giving recommendations for the clinical practice of others.
