Research summary
Background: The risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is unclear. The prevalence of ischemic heart disease ranges from 3 to 60% in patients with IPF and population studies have also detailed this. However to our knowledge there has been no analysis of cardiac risk in patients with IPF at time of diagnosis.
Aim: To analyse cardiovascular risk in patients with IPF at time of diagnosis.
Method: The QRISK2 online calculator will be used to calculate the relative risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with IPF prospectively, at time of diagnosis. Variables used in the calculator include: age, gender, ethnicity, smoking status, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, family history of ischaemic heart disease, CKD (stage 4 or 5), AF, on blood pressure treatment and systolic BP (if known).
Data will be collected from 8 NHS hospitals in England, using 20 patient records from each hospital.
The QRISK2 online calculator will then be applied retrospectively to a further validation cohort consisting of 200 patients with bronchiectasis from Papworth Hospital. The results will be subsequently analysed.
