Research summary
Older adults can sustain serious injuries after falling from standing (a height of less than two metres) and this is changing the face of trauma seen in most Emergency Departments in the UK. The triage tools that currently exist to identify the seriously injured patient and expedite assessment and treatment do not perform satisfactorily in this patient group. An earlier study we will complete before commencing data collection has used the experience of senior emergency medicine clinicians to design a triage tool for adults aged 65 and over who have fallen from standing. This study will compare the sensitivity and specificity of the new triage tool with pre-existing tools to decide whether the new tool can be developed further for use in Emergency Departments.
