Research summary
On 22 May 2017, an improvised incendiary device was detonated in the foyer of the Manchester Arena, killing 23 (22 victims, 1 perpetrator) and injuring 250 people. In the wake of the attack, a multi-agency assertive outreach programme; named the Manchester Resilience Hub, was set up to screen and treat people for psychological trauma. The present study will recruit 30 professionals from 10 organisations (from health, education, social care and charitable sectors) who collaborated in setting up the programme and up to six employees who are responsible for implementing it on a day-to-day basis (recruited from 2-3 organisations). We will interview participants in one-off semi-structured interviews, lasting up to one hour, on potential sources of programme planning and implementation failure. Recordings will be transcribed and through analysis themes will be drawn from this data to develop a model to evaluate the programme's actions and resources against its desired outcomes.
By gathering qualitative evidence from professionals involved in the planning and implementation of the Manchester Resilience Hub; the study should provide insight into how this type of response may be facilitated in the future.
