Research summary
Asbestos-induced malignant mesothelioma develops in the lung lining (pleura) and not in the lung itself (parenchyma). However, pleural tissue is rarely studied. We want to study pleural tissue using x-ray phase-contrast microtomography (XPCT) to reveal the possible presence and distribution of asbestos bodies (AB, asbestos plus the ferruginous coating it develops in biological tissues) in autoptic pleural tissue samples from subjects with prolonged occupational exposure to asbestos. The results will help clarify the lung-pleura transport mechanism and may support the hypothesis that the AB may have a possible role in the pathogenesis of asbestos-related diseases.
