Research summary
With the introduction of the European working time directive there has been a reduction in overall training hours for surgical trainees by a third. As a result, training needs to adapt to account for the reduction in training time. In recent years there has been a paradigm shift towards simulated surgical training. However many simulators are associated with high cost, eg in purchase, maintenance and limited accessibility. We have designed a low fidelity simulator -arthroscopic skills acquisition tools (ASATs). This may aid in surgical training in key hole surgery, such as arthroscopy. The ASATs are based on Adobe Action Script technology and can be performed on any laptop with use of a keyboard and mouse. It consists of a series of tasks with objective scores being recording depending on the level of the user's performance. We aim to compare the trainee's ASAT's scores to their performance in real arthroscopy. The shoulder arthroscopy performance would be objective measured using a validated Global Rating Score.
