Research summary
Heart failure is a medical condition in which heart is unable to pump blood as effectively as it should. It affects millions of people worldwide. It is associated with poor quality of life for patients and high healthcare costs. Changes in the way blood vessels function, may be key to the development of disease. However, little is known about the exact pathways that connect heart failure to vascular dysfunction. This study aims to understand how health of blood vessels affects heart failure. We will look at two important aspects of blood vessel health — arterial stiffness (how flexible the arteries are) and endothelial function (how well the inner lining of the blood vessels works). People with heart failure will be assessed three times: first at diagnosis, then after completing their usual medical treatment, and finally after finishing a cardiac rehabilitation programme (Part of their routine care). At each stage, we will measure heart and blood vessel function, as well as voice changes, since voice can sometimes reflect heart health. By comparing results before and after treatment and rehabilitation, we hope to learn how these therapies improve heart and blood vessel health. Target recruitment numbers are 50. This research may help guide better treatments and recovery strategies for people living with heart failure.
