Research summary
We are developing a breath test which will help us detect stomach and oesophageal (food pipe) cancers earlier. These cancers are difficult to detect at an early stage as the symptoms are similar to non-cancerous conditions. The delay between suspecting cancer and referral for a camera test (endoscopy) or scans can lead to the growth of cancer. If diagnosed early, the majority of people can survive these cancers. However, as the disease progresses, it reduces the number of treatment choices for patients, and the number of people who survive falls significantly. Early diagnosis is therefore key.
We hope to develop a breath test that detects small molecules called volatile organic compounds that are made by these cancers. Breath testing is quick, acceptable and would be offered directly by a GP. The breath samples are analysed for small molecules. These molecules provide early indicators of oesophagogastric cancer, to identify those who would benefit most from further investigations. Picking up these cancers earlier will increase our chances of curing the disease.
The breath test would streamline the referral pathway in primary care. If the test is positive, patients can be referred for urgent investigations. If the test is negative, the GP can reassure the patient and offer another test if symptoms continue.
