  • Research summary

Some bacteria can make people very ill. This illness is usually an infection that can be treated with antibiotic medicines. Unfortunately, these medicines can stop working if they’re used too often, or for longer than needed. This is called antibiotic resistance. To make sure that antibiotics keep on working, it’s important that they’re only given when needed and for as long as they are needed. \n\nFirst, we’ll create an information booklet for patients to answer questions about antibiotics and treatment. We’ll also build a website to help support health care workers. We’ll need to spend time talking to hospital patients and health care workers to create these materials. Hospital patients will be asked about a recent experience of being prescribed antibiotics and health care workers will be asked about their experience of being involved in the prescribing process. All of this information will then be used to help us create the booklet and the website. \n\nOnce we have drafts of how the booklet and website might look, we’ll ask patients and health care workers to review them and tell us what they think. We’ll be interested to know whether they find the information and layout clear and helpful. Patients and health care workers will be asked to talk about the information and to tell us about anything they like or dislike. It’s important for us to get this feedback so we can make the materials as useful as possible.\n
