Research summary
This trial is being performed to learn if an investigational drug called AZD8965 could be a safe and effective treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a progressive lung disease that causes scar tissue to build up in the lungs, making it hard to breathe. Current treatments for IPF include anti-fibrotic medications, supplemental oxygen, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lung transplant (in select cases). AZD8965 blocks an enzyme called arginase. Arginase contributes to the formation of collagen — a protein that builds up in the lungs of people with IPF. Too much collagen causes scarring and reduces lung function. By blocking arginase, AZD8965 may reduce collagen formation and help slow lung function decline. The scientists want to know if AZD8965 is safe and works in people with IPF by slowing the decline in lung function compared with a placebo. The placebo in this trial looks like AZD8965, but it does not contain AZD8965. All participants in the trial will continue to take their standard IPF medications during the trial.
