Research summary
NICE Guideline PH44 ‘Physical activity: brief advice for adults in primary care’ recommends the use of a screening tool to assess patients' physical activity levels in order to identify adults who are inactive. The pathway also recommends providing brief advice to adults who have been assessed as inactive to encourage more physical activity. The tool that NICE advocates, is the General Practice Physical Activity questionnaire (GPPAQ) which is primarily aimed at GPs and there is currently no literature on the use of it by physiotherapists. The aim of the study is to investigate whether physiotherapists are accurately identifying inactive adults from information gained in subjective assessments and the use of a screening tool would therefore be duplicating information. Additionally the study will aim to examine the frequency of brief activity and lifestyle advice that is currently provided by physiotherapists and identify any common themes for the type of advice given and reasons for not providing advice.
