  • Data collection arrangements

Tissues surplus to diagnostic requirements (paraffin embedded tissue, frozen tissue, CSF and other biological fluids) as well as donated blood samples are collected from neurosurgery patients, neurology patients and from healthy volunteers following informed consent. Samples are held as a Research Tissue Bank (RTB) at the Royal Preston Hospital. The consent will also allow access to patient background information and clinical history. Records are stored on a dedicated database secured within the hospital computer network and only accessible to authorised staff. Samples are anonymised and all projects are peer-reviewed by at least 3 senior clinician/scientist members of the RTB steering committee. Tissue is also available to researchers outside the North-West neuroscience research collaboration but additional NHS ethical approval is required.

  • Research programme

Brain Tumour North West (BTNW), Neurologists and Scientists form collaborative research groups working to improve diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours and other neurological disorders. These groups include Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, University of Central Lancashire, University of Liverpool, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Walton Centre of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Manchester Universities, University of Wolverhampton, University of Leeds, Hull University Teaching Hospitals, University of Sheffield and Lancaster University. Research is aimed at improving understanding of the genetics of brain tumours and other neurological disorders, identifying blood and tissue markers to monitor treatment or recurrence as well as methods of improving diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.
