Data collection arrangements
Paraffin embedded samples, frozen tissue and donated blood, surplus to diagnostic requirements, are collected from neurosurgery patients and healthy volunteers subject to fully informed consent and held as part of a research tissue bank (RTB) at the Royal Preston Hospital. The consent will also allow access to demographic information and clinical history, all records being held on a dedicated database secured within the hospital network. Samples are anonymised by number and research projects are peer-reviewed by 3 senior clinician/scientist members of the RTB steering committee before release to researchers. Tissue is also available to researchers outside BTNW but external NRES ethical approval will be requested before tissue release.
Research programme
Brain Tumour Northwest (BTNW) is a research group working to improve diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours and comprises a collaboration between Lancashire teaching hospitals, University of Central Lancashire, University of Liverpool, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Walton Centre of Neurology Neurosurgery, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Wolverhampton and Lancaster University. Research is aimed at improving understanding of brain tumours genetics, identifying blood and tissue markers to monitor treatment or recurrence as well as methods of improving diagnosis and treatment.
