  • Data collection arrangements

Paraffin embedded samples, frozen tissue and donated blood, urine and saliva, surplus to diagnostic requirements, are collected from gynaecology and urology patients subject to fully informed consent and held as part of a research tissue bank (RTB) at the Royal Preston Hospital. The consent will also allow acess to demographic information and clinical history, all records being held on a dedicated database secured within the hospital network. Samples are anonymised by number and research projects are peer-reviewed by senior clinicians from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and senior scientists from Lancaster university before release to researchers. Tissue is also available to researchers outside Lancashire Teaching Hospitals research collaborations but external NRES ethical approval will be requested before tissue release.

  • Research programme

The Lancaster Centre for Biophotonics and Epigenetic Research groups have UK, European and UAE based collaborative research programmes, with clinicians and scientists conducting investigations into novel areas of basic science, diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological and urological tumours. This collaboration comprises researchers from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust, Lancaster University, Section of Molecular Carcinogenesis:Institute of Cancer Research at Sutton, Department of Medical Oncology, Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Institute of Human Nutrition:Berlin University, and the Department of Biochemistry:United Arab Emirates:UAE. Previous research projects have had ethical approval to send anonymised tissue to our collaborators in Berlin and UAE.
