Samples will be obtained from research studies / trials where participants give appropriate informed valid generic consent for their samples and data to be used for future research through the Archie Cochrane Biobank.
Human tissue samples may include, but are not limited to, the following:
blood, cheek swabs, nasal swabs, plasma, serum, skin, sputum, stool, throat swabs, urine or wound swabs together with associated organisms i.e. microbes, collected during the course of REC approved research studies / trials undertaken by Cardiff University and Public Health Wales.Data collected will be research study / trial specific including the study identifier and may include NHS number, gender, date of birth, postcode, ethnicity and occupation; together with tissue sample specific data.
The location (building, floor, room, freezer, shelf, box, row & column) and transfer (the issue to projects, quality assurance tasks and disposal) of all tissue samples will be recorded within a secure database. An electronic audit log will be kept of each activity (entry and modification).
Samples will be stored at the Heath Park site Cardiff University.
Research programme
The Archie Cochrane Biobank will ensure that valuable human tissue samples e.g. urine, serum & stool etc., and organisms collected during the course of high quality infections and related research studies / trials for further research. Clinicians and researchers studying the diagnosis, causes and treatment of infections and related conditions may apply to use samples held within the Archie Cochrane Biobank. Researchers will be able to apply for access to the samples and data from the Archie Cochrane Biobank. It is not currently planned to issue samples to commercial organisations, although they may collaborate with University research groups to form part of an academic-industry project that applies for use of data and/or tissue samples. It is anticipated that the Archie Cochrane Biobank will encourage the development of new and build on existing collaborations with other investigators working in the Infections and related conditions domain.
