Research summary
This study will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) and the University of Leeds looking at the treatment and outcomes of patients with rectal cancer. This study will utilise medical images, specifically Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans pre- and post-treatments, and extracts from patient electronic health records (EHR). These extracts will include demographics, comorbidities, treatments given with time to event, tumour characteristics coming from both clinical measurements and diagnosis from pre-surgery medical imaging and post-surgical histopathology diagnoses. The study will use machine learning methods to analyse this data with the goal of predicting lymph node metastasis and markers of response to anti-cancer treatments including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This data is routinely collected within LTHTs patient health record, PPM. All data used will be anonymised and thus cannot be used to identify any individual patients used in this study. This project will provide supporting evidence of cancer patient outcomes and help shape and improve care for rectal cancer patients. This study may lead to publications within peer reviewed journals and further research projects.
