  • Research summary

The body composition status of children with chronic kidney disease is uncertain. This is due to variation in the ways of measuring body composition in children with changes in fluid levels.
The overall aim of this project is to understand the body composition differences of children with CKD, and how this differs in different stages of CKD?
We think that children at different stages of disease have different types of body composition and we will attempt to assess this using BIA, Hand Grip Strength and appetite questionnaires.
To test this our primary objectives will be for Study 1: Determination of body composition of children with CKD using BIA and HGS; Study 2: Determination of body composition changes in children with haemodialysis. The Secondary objectives will be: Appetite assessment of this population.
    We want to find out:
    • Can an appetite questionnaire be used to assess of body composition children with CKD?
    • How does grip strength in children with CKD compare with healthy controls?
    • Is total body water different in children with CKD compared with healthy controls?
    • Are levels of body water between ECW and ICW different in children compared with healthy controls?
    • Are phase angle and illness marker interchangeable in children with CKD?
    • How do TBW, ECW and ICW change during a haemodialysis session in children with established renal failure?
