  • Research summary

There is a growing interest in the role of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in stroke. Alongside this interest, PROMs present challenges to implementation not shared by traditional clinical or process driven outcomes. The self-reported nature of PROMs is particularly challenging in stroke where post-stroke impairment to language or memory and thinking skills directly impact on the ability to self-report effectively. The early period post-stroke is the time of greatest impairment but also the period of most substantial recovery and capturing the early baseline impairment and the subsequent recovery is vitally important to healthcare professionals and stroke survivors alike.

One aspect of PROM administration of use is to track or note changes, which requires two separate completions of a PROM, thereby allowing for the detection of change in scores or clinically meaningful change to be calculated. Despite this, there is no agreement in the literature as to when is the most acceptable period to attempt this baseline administration. It is these aspects of PROM capture in the context of post-stroke impairments and wider contextual factors that this study seeks to understand with a focus on which post-stroke factors most impact PROM completion for the purpose of future improvements to PROMs to increase post-stroke completion rates.
