Research summary
Fixed orthodontic appliances (fixed braces) are commonly associated with pain and discomfort. Many studies have investigated the severity and duration of pain following the placement of fixed appliances. The perception of anticipated discomfort and associated pain can discourage many from undergoing orthodontic treatment. It is possible that in these circumstances, patients know someone perhaps, a friend, sibling or colleague, who has undergone orthodontic fixed appliance treatment and recalls significant pain. Few studies, if any, have assessed the recall of pain and its accuracy following placement of fixed appliances. This raises the question βIs more or less pain recalled than actually experienced following placement of fixed appliances?β This study proposes to investigate whether the pain experienced immediately after and at one week post placement of fixed appliances, is the same as that recalled at 6 months post placement of fixed appliances. These subjects will be undertaking routine fixed appliance orthodontic treatment that will be no different to any other patient within our department. Pain and anxiety will be assess using a questionnaire (locally designed and constructed student and chief investigator), immediately before the placement of fixed appliances, at one week and 6 months.
