Research summary
This study aims to characterise antibiotic prescribing and antibiotic resistance for renal inpatients, given the greater risk of infection in these patients and therefore the likely greater usage of antibiotics. This has the ultimate aim of better informing preventative (for instance infection control) and stewardship programmes to promote safe and efficacious use of antibiotics and reduce unnecessary prescribing. The proposed study will use pseudonymised routine electronic health record (EHR) data (i.e. personal identifiers such as names and addressed are removed) regarding adult admissions occurring at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham (QEHB) – a large UK teaching hospital providing both secondary and tertiary renal services for the West Midlands.
