  • Data collection arrangements

Anthony Nolan has HTA compliant 3rd party agreements in place with eight hospital sites we collect cord bloods from namely:

    • Birmingham Women’s Hospital
    • Saint Mary's, Manchester
    • King’s College Hospital in London
    • Leicester Royal Infirmary
    • Leicester General Hospital
    • Nottingham City Hospital
    • Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham
    • The Royal Free Hospital in London

Trained staff members are in-situ to coordinate all the logistical aspects. These include delivering education and information to Mothers/Donors, taking informed consent in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004, the Human Tissue Regulations 2007 and the HTA’s Code of Practice, collection of the unit.

The cord bloods are transiently stored at the collection site under secure and controlled conditions until a 3rd party courier provider picks them up for delivery (under controlled conditions) to the Anthony Nolan Cell Therapy Centre (ANCTC) in Nottingham. Records retained by us include identification, clinical evaluation of the donor and verification of the conditions under which the material was procured.

These indicate dates and the identities of staff involved in each significant step of the operation (for example, records of transport and delivery).

  • Research programme

Around 2,000 people in the UK need a bone marrow transplant every year. Stringent tissue matching is required for optimum success. Family members provide the best matches however this is not an option for over two thirds of patients. Currently, an unrelated donor from a Registry like Anthony Nolan can only be found for 60% of UK patients. This drops dramatically to 20.5% if you're a patient from a black, Asian or ethnic minority background due to a shortage of donors with these tissue types on the Register. Recently successful transplants using cord blood, which does not need as stringent matching as bone marrow, identified a way to redress this shortfall. We therefore set up the ANCTC Cord Blood Bank in Nottingham to provide the best match to more people with blood cancer. The ANCTC processes and stores cord blood for national and international clinical transplantation centres. The ANCTC also carries out world-class research using blood of non-clinical standard, and supplies cord blood to other approved research programmes throughout the UK and Europe. We hope academics and scientists can use our blood to improve cord blood banking strategies and develop new lifesaving therapies.
