  • Data collection arrangements

The tissue collected and stored by the Anthony Nolan Research Tissue Bank includes cord blood, cord and placental tissue, whole blood donations, lymphocytes (white blood cells), bone marrow, and peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC). Both medical and deomographic data will be collected for cord and adult donors; all data will be pseudonymised.

Donors are consented at our collection sites, and the collected sample is either distributed directly from the collection site or transported to the Cell Therapy Centre in Anthony Nolan and processed for storage or future use. Donors are provided with information on the collection processes and examples of the broad range of research projects their material could be used in. Informed consent for all donors is obtained for storage, and (broad) research use of their material.

  • Research programme

The overall intention of establishing a research tissue bank, is to provide high quality ethically sourced human tissue samples to use in biomedical research. All research supported by the AN RTB must demonstrate patient benefit, clearly showing that the work will contribute to understanding of diseases, improve existing therapies, or directly lead to the development of new treatments. Donor material collected through the AN RTB may be provided to research within Anthony Nolan or to external research organisations such as academic institutions, public healthcare bodies, or commercial organisations worldwide. Previously, the AN RTB has provided material for several studies, including fundamental biology studies looking at hematopoietic stem cells, cord blood for the development of cell therapies based on NK cells, and development and validation of equipment and processes for the manufacture of novel cell therapies.
