Research summary
Chronic cough is a poorly understood condition which can have a significant negative impact on patients' lives. Currently, there is no treatment for chronic cough, although studies of P2X3 antagonists have shown promising results. The mechanism behind these drugs is currently unknown. The aim of the study is to analyse and compare the levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the airways of chronic cough patients and healthy controls. ATP is the ligand of P2X3 channels and therefore there is a strong possibility that ATP plays a role in chronic cough. We are looking to recruit patients from our tertiary cough clinic who are undergoing a bronchoscopy as part of their clinical care to take extra samples for analysis. Prior to the bronchoscopy, we will ask the patients to attend a visit at the Clinical Research Facility, where they will be asked to complete some questionnaires, blood samples will be taken and they will be fitted with an ambulatory cough monitor which will record their cough for 24 hours. We aim to recruit 50 patients and 20 healthy volunteers, who will also undergo a research bronchoscopy, to the study.
