Research summary
To assess and describe the histological anatomy of the ileocaecal junction, particularly in relation to surgical anatomy. Specifically to measure and assess muscle thickness in this area with the use of special staining and digital pathology. Secondary assessment will include assessment of the small and large bowel mucosa in this area. This is an area in which there is a paucity of research however, a broader understanding of the surgical anatomy and pathology has significant clinical implications with regards to surgical stoma formation.
