  • Research summary

The CF clinic at Royal Papworth Hospital has recently set-up a virtual clinic service, which CF patients are able to access. These patients are given the opportunity to be seen via virtual (Skype)clinic on alternate clinic appointments. They will be seen via virtual access by the lead CF nurse specialist who will review the patients data and using a specific clinical algorithm will discuss findings to ascertain whether the patient requires a face to face clinic visit review or not. The patients record clinical measurements on a smartphone via an App which allows the clinical team to monitor their progress.

The aim of the project is to analyse the data collected routinely as part of the virtual clinic process to assess
    1) if an algorithm can be developed to more accurately detect if a patient's health is deteriorating.
    2) evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the virtual clinic service from a patient and healthcare perspective.
    3) the patients will all be asked to complete a short questionnaires at 3, 12 and 24 months to evaluate the service. A qualitative study will also be undertaken with a subset of patients being asked to take part in semi-structured interviews via audio and video recordings at 3, 12, and 24 months.

Analysis will be done by link-anonymised data. Interviews will generate identifiable data, but this will be restricted to the research team and anonymised prior to publication.
