Research summary
HIV, which is the causative agent of AIDS, can be treated but the treatment is suppressive and has to be continued lifelong. Interruptions lead to recrudescence of infection from sites where the virus has gone to sleep (latent virus). To eradicate HIV and allow us to stop treatment we need to understand HIV latency and how to reverse it. Cellular factors help HIV stay latent and we want to investigate how these work and how we can interfere with them to help cure patients of the virus completely and allow them to discontinue treatment safely
