Research summary
This will be a retrospective study, assessing the degree of facial asymmetry in patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), during common expressions including a maximum smile. Three-dimensional video recordings of the patients' facial expressions were captured previously as part of their routine NHS care by the cleft team. The images of patients between the ages of 10 and 25 years will be included in the study, and the degree of facial asymmetry for each patient will be analysed mathematically using specialised computer software. We will then be able to determine if there is a relationship between facial asymmetry at rest and during maximum smile. The results will help to improve the future surgical management of this group of patients.
