Research summary
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between environmental exposures and exacerbations of COPD with participants in and around London using portable air quality monitors and symptom diaries. The purpose is to collect and analyse pilot data for future research projects. 20 participants will be recruited and invited to participate in the physiological exacerbation study (COPE 2) from clinics at the The Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. As per the original COPE study protocol, participants will be given a personal air monitor (PAM) to monitor the air quality around them for up to 6 months. They will be asked to take it out of the house at least once a week. They will also be given a diary to complete daily peak flow readings and to indicate whether they had any symptoms, sleep disturbance or treatment each day over the 6 months. In addition to this, as part of COPE 2, they will be asked to attend the clinic for additional assessments at the following time points: baseline, when they have an exacerbation, and 4-weeks after the exacerbation. The assessments will include blood and sputum samples to examine virology and bacteriology, a measurement of respiratory drive, thigh muscle cross section measurements, muscle strength testing, walking and balance tests, and questionnaires about their perceived health and quality of life.
