  • Research summary

With more than 34,000 breast cancer survivors in Yorkshire, and the numbers set to increase, the need for cancer support services to enable people to live a healthy and active life with and beyond breast cancer is also increasing. The Yorkshire Haven centre in Leeds provides emotional support, complementary therapies, and healthy living activities to help relieve the side-effects of treatment and support the wellbeing of people living with and beyond breast cancer. To help more people get access to these support services, there is a need to understand who does and who does not attend the Haven and why, and to find out whether more localised services in Yorkshire are required to meet patients’ unmet needs.
The breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and personal characteristics (e.g. age, marital status, education, job title and status, dependants) of breast cancer patients attending hospital clinics in Leeds, Bradford and Hull will be collected by questionnaire and compared to data collected from patients who visited the Yorkshire Haven during 2010-2014. Hospital breast cancer patients who have not attended The Haven in Leeds will also be asked to complete a second questionnaire exploring their reasons for not using The Haven’s services. Telephone interviews will also be carried out with breast care nurses to find out how they inform breast cancer patients about the Yorkshire Haven. The findings of this study will be used to help direct the Haven’s support services to Yorkshire breast cancer patients with unmet needs.
