Research summary
Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) is a very common and functionally significant side-effect of head and neck cancer and its treatment. The MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) is a patient-reported outcome measure of swallow-related quality of life, designed specifically for use with head and neck cancer patients.
The MDADI is widely used in both head and neck cancer treatment research and in clinical practice. However, the tool has never been tested with UK patient data and clinicians to check that it makes sense to them and contains relevant questions, and is sufficiently useable in clinical practice. In this study I will ask UK Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs)who work with people with head and neck cancer who have dysphagia about the use of the tool in their clinical practice. In addition to this I will also look at MDADI scores from existing patients, using this data to carry out statistical checks on the tool to see if it meets internationally agreed standards.
The aim of the study is to make recommendations that will make the tool better and more helpful in the future for patients, clinicians and researchers.
