Research summary
This research aims to investigate the effects of a home based exercise program on functional outcomes such as exercise endurance, muscle and functional strength and effects on quality of life in patients with breast cancer undergoing (neo) adjuvant chemotherapy, a treatment given pre-operatively. \n\nThe research question is of significant importance as much is known of the effects chemotherapy can have on patients’ physical functioning however there are little services available at outpatient level to help patients prevent physical decline due to chemotherapy effects. If such a service is proven to work, it could help prevent future admissions into hospital due to physical decline as a result of cancer treatments and help improve quality of life.\n\nWithin this research the area of oncology is being studied and the effects a home based exercise program will have on patient’s functional outcomes and quality of life.\n\nFor participants to be eligible they will need to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, undergoing second cycle neo (adjuvant) chemotherapy, medically stable to participate in an exercise intervention study, English speaking and willing to comply with a six week program. \n\nThe study will be conducted at St Georges University Hospital London within the Oncology Outpatient department. \n\nThe study will last for six weeks. Measurements such as Quality of life, exercise capacity, muscle force and functional strength will be assessed pre intervention. Participants will then be given an exercise diary with a six week program consisting of progressive walking and six strength exercises. Participants will be given a pedometer to record the number of steps walked daily, encouraged to reach a tailored target and asked to complete a daily diary entry with any self-reported emerging behaviours and attitudes resulting from the program. When completed the functional outcomes will be re-tested and the exercise diaries collected for further analysis.\n
