Research summary
The main objective of this research is to investigate the success of commercially available dry eye treatments in order to determine the optimal treatment based on the presenting clinical ocular signs and symptoms. There are many treatments for dry eye available, but there are no evidence based clinical treatment strategies to selected between these for individual patients.
Information sheets will be given to patients who report symptoms of dry eye which they wish to have managed. For those confirming they wish to take part, written informed consent will be collected.
As part of normal care the tear film covering the anterior eye will be assessed by multiple techniques used routinely in ophthalmic practice. These tests will be carried out to help inform the first choice of prescribed treatment and to review the success of the treatment at follow-up appointments. The treatment will be decided upon by the clinician based on the signs and symptoms, in consultation with the patient. The patient will also be asked to fill in a questionnaire to determine the subjective success of each treatment. The visits will be about 30 minutes in duration and the assessments will be repeated to optimise individual dry eye treatment.
The objective and subjective outcome parameters for each dry eye treatment studied will be analysed and used to allow targeted initial management of treatment for future patients.
