Research summary
Burns are a common and debilitating form of trauma. Adequate first aid is a critical in step reducing injury burden and improving clinical outcomes for all burn sizes. Current guidance recommends irrigation with cool running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible after injury followed by coverage with loose strips of cling film.
There is currently a paucity in the literature regarding burns first aid knowledge in the general population of the United Kingdom. The primary aim of this study is to identify burns first aid knowledge of adults and caregivers attending one of the largest regions burns/ plastic surgery centres in the United Kingdom.
Data collection will be carried out through observational analysis of survey results which will be collected from online based surveys. Links to this survey, along with patient information sheets will be present in the burns/ plastics trauma clinic outpatient waiting rooms. These surveys will be anonymous, and aim to capture information on first aid knowledge. We also aim to capture some limited demographic information (which will be optional), which we will corroborate with previous data demographic data in children/ caregivers.
