Research summary
From clinical experience and examination of the scientific literature, we know people who have balance or dizzy conditions often have issues walking. However, very little information is understood of how one's walking (i.e. gait) is altered. The study aims to investigate gait in people with balance problems before having any rehabilitation for the balance dysfunction or dizziness. In order to do this, three measures are being employed. The study will look at patients self-confidence when walking, as assessed using a questionnaire. The gait will be assessed objectively in a motion laboratory through the use of cameras which will monitor special light reflecting sticky pads on joints. The data gathered from this will be used to create a three dimensional image of joint movement which will then be analysed. The final measure will look at how the patient performs whilst undertaking ten tests which represents everyday walking related tasks.
This will give the researchers the information to understand how these three different measures relate to each other and also if one measure is predictive of another. Furthermore, it will also inform the researchers how these measures vary from people with and without balance problems.
