Research summary
Medium Secure Units (MSUs) treat individuals who present a serious risk of harm to others and often themselves; as such the outcomes of patients discharged from MSUs are of considerable public and professional interest. A previous study followed up a first admission cohort of discharged patients from Arnold Lodge, a MSU in Leicester, for up to 20 years (Davies et al., 2007). They found high reoffending rates, high rates of readmission and increased mortality, particularly from suicide. The current study will expand the sample size and extend the follow-up period of the original study to cover the first 30 years. Follow-up information will be obtained from NHS clinical records and administrative databases such as the Office of National Statistics (e.g., cause of death) and The Police National Computer (reconviction data). Potential benefits of this research include making community services aware of the need to address risks of suicide and physical ill health as well as reoffending, and quantifying statistical risks and timescales for reoffending in clinical populations. There will be no direct patient contact at any point during this study. The initial study received Section 251 support (formerly Section 60) and this will be necessary for the extension of the project.
